It’s official: fall is here! The leaves are changing, pumpkin is making its way into every recipe and Halloween is right around the corner. Best of all, many of our fall programs still have openings!

Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront (BPRW) offers a variety of programs with something for everyone – from ASL, Tai Chi and games to outdoor exploration and sports. Programs take place in safe and convenient locations across Burlington with experienced instructors to enrich your fall season.

Fall programs with availability:

Learning

American Sign Language 1 – Ages 18+

Mondays 7:30-8:30pm

Students will be introduced to the expressive world of ASL. No experience necessary.

Continuing in ASL – Ages 18+

Tuesdays 7-8:30pm

Students will learn vocabulary, loan signs, construct sentences and participate in ASL conversations. Must have already taken ASL 3 and college-level ASL 2 and 3 classes.

AARP Driving – Ages 50+

Mondays 12:00-4:30pm

In this classroom setting, drivers will learn essential skills and information on changing driving environments.

Zach’s ‘Magic’ Game Club – Ages 9-14

Thursdays 3:30-5:30pm

Specifically designed for youth with a familiarity or interest with Magic: The Gathering cards. Participants will have the chance to play and learn other strategy games such as chess, Strategy, Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Risk and more!

Wilderness First Aid – Ages 16+

Saturdays and Sundays 8:30am-5pm

Attendees of this two-year certification will learn from the staff of SOLO, a nationally recognized leader in the field of wilderness medicine. The course will cover prevention and management of injuries and illnesses for outdoor-related and general emergencies.

 

Movement

Tai Chi with the YMCA – Ages 50+

Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm

This evening class will relax the mind and body with slow, gentle movements that promote balance, posture and breathing.

Balance Mobility Core & Fitlot with the YMCA – Ages 50+

Mondays 9:30-10:30am

Participants will gain stability and posture through core-strengthening movements.

North End Yoga – Ages 18+

Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-7pm

Jen Green of Hatha Yoga will demonstrate stretches, postures and deep breathing techniques to relax and balance the body and mind.

 

Ice Skating

Youth Skating Lessons Level 1-6 Ages 5-13

Mondays 3:45-4:45pm, Saturdays 11:30-12:15pm, Sundays 1:45-2:30pm

Skaters will practice gliding, stopping and turning with stroking, edges and crossovers. Spins and jumps will be introduced as skills are mastered. Each class will include coach-supervised practice time.

Adult Group Skating Lessons – Ages 18+

Sundays 12:30-1:30pm

In this class designed especially for adults, skaters will learn in skill-based groups for 30 minutes and free skate for 30 minutes. Coaches will be supervising free skate to provide insight when needed.

Early Release Synchronized Skating – Ages 8-14

Wednesdays 2:30-3:15pm

Young skating athletes will learn to synchronize their moves to captivating music, building confidence team-building skills in the process.

Itty Bitty Skating Lessons – Ages 3-5

Saturdays 10:45-11:30am; Sundays 1-1:45pm

Little ones of all skill levels will learn how to stand, march, glide, swizzle and stop on the ice. Games and activities will be used to practice skills.

Advanced Basics – Ages 5-14

Sundays 2:30-3:15pm

Skaters will work in large groups, small groups and at an individual level to improve edge work, spins, jumps and ensemble skills. For highly-motivated skaters pre Free Skate-Preliminary level who have passed Basic 4.

Taste of Theater on Ice – Ages 5-14

Sundays 4:30-5:30pm

Skaters will flex their theatrical skills by practicing ensemble performance and character work on the ice.

Learn to Play Hockey – Ages 6-13

Sundays 4:30-5:30pm

Beginners will discover skating, puck handling and hockey technique. This program, which is in partnership with BAHA youth Hockey, is also a good fit for current players looking to fine-tune their basic skills before committing to a more competitive program.

 

Outdoor Recreation

Raven Ridge Natural Area Outing – Ages 7-14

Monday, January 15th, 2024 (Rescheduled)

11:30 am-3:30 pm

Hikers will join Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront for an excursion up to Raven Ridge Natural Area, a nature preserve in Monkton, VT.

Colchester Pond Hike – Ages 7-14

Friday, October 6th 11am-4pm

Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront will lead a hike around Colchester Pond.

Sam Mazza’s Corn Maze – Ages 7-11

Wednesday, October 25th 11am-3pm

Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront will host an after-school trip to Sam Mazza’s Corn Maze.

Bingham Falls Hike – Ages 7-14

Monday, November 20th 11am-3:15pm

Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront will lead a hike to iconic Bingham Falls.

Dumont Meadow Hike – Ages 7-14

Tuesday, November 21st 11am-3:15pm

Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront will lead a hike around DuMont Meadow in Stowe.

Sunset Rock Hike – Ages 7-14

Wednesday, November 22nd 11am-3:15pm

Burlington’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront will lead a hike up to Sunset Rock in Stowe.

 

Sports

Beginner Pickleball Clinics – Ages 18+

Thursdays 6-8pm, Saturdays 1-3pm

Beginners to the game will learn parts of the court, rules, scoring, basic rally shots (forehand, backhand, dinks) and volleys.

Skills (Low/High Intermediate) Pickleball Clinics – Ages 18+

Thursdays 6-8pm, Saturdays 1-3pm

Players at Low and High Intermediate skill levels will become more consistent and successful in their game through drills learned techniques. Clinics will address each phase of the game: dinking, ground strokes and basic high percentage strategies.

Melanie Davidian Womxn’s Basketball League – Ages 18+

Sundays 12:30-5:30pm

Players of all skill levels are welcome into this accepting, LGBTQIA+ inclusive league that includes cis-women, trans, intersex, non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals.
