White Cane Awareness Day

YOU’RE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 52ND ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF WHITE CANE AWARENESS DAY!

The Vermont Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired invites you to join in the celebration by “Walking the Walk” of a visually impaired person in Burlington. Meet at Battery Park, Burlington at 12:30pm to prepare for an experiential walk starting at 1pm. Light refreshments will follow at the Overlook Cafe, 108 Cherry Street. Your presence on this day would be appreciated as a show of support for the safety of all those who depend on the white cane for independence and the freedom of mobility.

This event, proclaimed by US President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, takes place every year on October 15th and is recognized as White Cane Safety Day. The mission of White Cane Day is to engage community awareness of the abilities of people who are blind and to promote equal opportunities as any other American. While educating the community about blindness and how visually impaired individuals live and work independently, we celebrate their abilities and honor their successful achievements and contributions in such an extremely sighted world. This empowering occurrence is one of the events hosted through the Vermont Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The division provides statewide services, including vocational rehabilitation and independent living, for eligible Vermonters who may be blind and visually impaired.
