Nature Poetry Writing

July 16, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

From William Wordsworth to Mary Oliver, poets have turned to nature for inspiration, consolation, fascination and delight. We invite you to join your friends and neighbors by taking time out to read, write and reflect on our natural landscape, and allow it to inspire you to create your own imaginative poems.  We’ll begin by reading a selection of poems by well-known poets. Then, armed with suggestions from Angela, participants will disperse to look, listen and record their observations and reflections. After a period of time alone, we will come back together to talk about how we might turn our first impressions into finished poems we might want to share.

This free poetry workshop is designed for participants to connect with nature and express that connection through poetry. The workshop leader Angela Patten, author of 3 poetry collections and a teacher of creative writing and literature at the University of Vermont, will guide participants through the creative process. Participants will disperse into Oakledge Park to look, listen and record their observations and reflections. After a period of time alone, everyone will come back together to talk about how they might turn their first impressions into finished poems.

Registration is free, but is required prior to attending. You can register at the event’s website through the link below.

Nature Poetry Writing is one of a three part Community Naturalist Series: Creative Exploration of Burlington’s Natural Landscapes. The complete list of workshops and links to register are shown below.
